Since Double Eagles are the heaviest of the less
uncommon gold coins, handling and storage are more unkind to them, particularly
their obverses, than to smaller denominations. While we make no pretensions of
being professional graders, we try to stay within parameters established by
those who are. As we constantly reiterate, the ultimate grading decision rests
with the purchaser, and we believe our photos and descriptions are clear enough
for anyone to make an informed decision.

1882S A
1882-S $20

This $20 Gold Piece came from San Francisco Mint, and was
surprisingly well struck in 1882. Letters are surprisingly clear on Liberty's
headband. Upper hair has only slight indications of any wear. The best part is
that the front of this coin is in near-full lustre. Reverse is even more
lustrous with excellent detail and negligible indications of any wear. Own
it for Ounce Spot + $65.00.

$20 Liberty Gold Piece AU58

We consider this $20 Liberty
Gold Piece from the 1889 issue of the San Francisco Mint to be a high AU on the
strength of its details and lustre. Obverse hairlines are strong, and headband
letters are strong to T and Y, whose marring is explicable as bag contact
because of moderate marking generally on the obverse. Reverse Eagle feathers
are fully detailed, and horizontal shield lines are sufficiently clear. Both
sides have full lustre. Bag marking is moderate to obverse, but there's one
conspicuous mark on Liberty's cheek. The important grader, however, is the
ultimate purchaser. Own it for Ounce
Spot + $75.00.

1889-S $20

1890S A
1890-S $20

This excellent $20 Liberty Gold Piece is a sample of the San
Francisco Mint's output from 1890. Despite moderate bag marking on the obverse,
some of which affects Liberty's face and throat area slightly, hair detail is
quite strong and shows little indications of wear. Complete lines are visible
if weak above the headband and near Liberty's ear. Considerable lustre among
stars and near edges. Reverse has conspicuous lustre on well over 50 percent of
its area, and feather details are excellent. We consider this coin a lower
grade AU, but we believe that the photo is sufficiently clear for prospective
buyers to grade for themselves. Own it for Ounce Spot + $65.00.
1891S A
$20

This is an excellent $20 Liberty Gold Piece from San Francisco
Mint, issue in 1891. It has full lustre, obverse and reverse, with some
detracting field toning to obverse, more conspicuous in the photo than it is in
the slab container (which is another reason that we photograph our coins out of
the container). Bag contact marking is modest, mostly impacting the upper
letters on the headband on obverse. There is a tiny partial rim nick at
1891S B
1891-S $20

This excellent $20 Gold Piece is part of San Francisco Mint's
output for 1891. Obverse has negligible bag marking, but has a slight flattened
area on the outside rim edge near the 10 o'clock star and another one at 5
o’clock on the obverse rim edge. Both are visible in the photo. Hair detail is
nearly complete with some slight flattening on braid and directly beneath it.
Beads are visible but not entirely clear all the way down to the Y. Reverse has
negligible wear indications, negligible marking, and plenty of lustre. Because
of the complexion clarity, lustre, and details on obverse, we consider this
coin to be an AU. Photo detail, however, should be sharp enough for interested
parties to draw their own conclusions as to grade. Own it for Ounce Spot + $50.00.
1893 A
1893 $20

This exceptionally nice $20
Gold Piece is part of Philadelphia Mint's output from 1893. Hairlines are
visible but weak in places. Braid has considerable detail as does upper hair.
Beads and letters are somewhat flattened from E on downward. Bag marking is
minimal on both obverse and reverse. Obverse has some nice dark toning
interspersed with the stars. Reverse has mostly a hing
of dark toning except near the rim, where its lustre is brighter. Minimal
indications of any contact on reverse. Own it for Ounce Spot + $50.00.
1893S A
1893-S $20

This $20 Gold Piece is part of San Francisco Mint's output from
the year 1893. Obverse has slight wear indications. Upper hairlines are visible
if weak in about 10 percent of their surface area. Slight indications of wear
or contact to braid. Obverse has, we're happy to say, considerable, near-full
lustre. Reverse is excellent and lustrous with excellent details. Own it
for Ounce Spot + $65.00.
1894 A
$20

This excellent specimen from Philadelphia Mint's output in the
middle of the 1890s Depression comes from 1894. The coin is excellent. Both
obverse and reverse have full lustre and clear detail. Obverse's headband
letters and hairlines are clear, but bag- or contact marking is moderate. The
coin has strong eye appeal, with the only detractions at 18 inches away being
very tiny edge marks between 10 and 11 o'clock on the rim, a hair scratch from
Liberty's throat toward the 7 o'clock star, and a mark from directly over the 8
digit in date to the 4 o'clock star. Reverse detail and lustre are strong, with
the beginnings of some dark toning beneath the Eagle's left wing in the field.
We consider this Liberty Double Eagle to be an MS 61, but prospective buyers
should be able to come up with their own grade from studying the photograph. Own it for Spot + $100.00
1894 B
1894 $20

This $20 Gold Piece, struck in
1894 C
$20

This $20 Liberty Gold Piece is a product of Philadelphia Mint
from 1894. It has full lustre both sides, very attracktive.
Bag marking to obverse is exctenseive but light, and
the main impacted feature is the upper parts of the final 3 letters on the
Headband. There is some tiny contact marking to the extreme outer rim edge
between
1894S A
1894-S $20

Despite wear indications on
letters E though Y on Liberty's headband, on her braid, on the center area of
her upper hair, and to the hair in areas below the braid, we believe she has
sufficient sharp details to warrant calling this $20 Gold Piece, struck in San
Francisco in 1894, an XF. Obverse has only moderate bag marking in its fields,
and visible toned lustre near its edges and among its stars. Reverse has
negligible wear to Eagle's feathers and to horizontal shield lines. There is
considerable nice toned and frosty lustre in reverse's field and among letters.
Photos should provide enough clarity and detail for prospective buyers to
determine grade for themselves. Own it for Ounce Spot + $50.00.
1894S B
$20

This $20 Liberty Gold Piece from
1896 A
$20

This $20 Liberty Gold Piece, struck in
1896S A
1896-S $20

There is sufficient hairline detail and braid detail among a
fully lustrous obverse to warrant calling this $20 Gold Piece a strong AU. It
was struck in San Francisco in 1896, and bag marking is extensive but not deep.
Reverse is fully lustrous, well-struck and well-detailed. We encourage
prospective buyers to study the photo and arrive at their own conclusions,
however, as to grading. Own it for Ounce
Spot + $75.00.
1897S A
$20

This $20 Gold Piece is one of San Francisco Mint's issue from the year 1897. Both obverse and reverse have full
lustre, and bag marking is minimal on both. Most surface contact evidence is
confined to upper letters on the headband. There is a conspicuous area of black
toning or soot on obverse beneath Liberty's throat, but it is not a mark or
scratch. Similarly, on Reverse, two tinier vertical soot pieces traverse two
letters of the Motto. There iare visible marks to the
reverse rim between 12 and 1 o'clock and at 5 o'clock. We consider this coin to
be MS63. Photo is sufficiently clear, we believe, for interested parties to
judge for themselves. (sent to ANACS for
grading; eta available July 2008)
1897S B
1897-S $20

The obverse of this
1898S A
$20

This $20 Gold Piece, a representative of the San Francisco Mint's
output from 1898, has full lustre. Bag marking is minimal, and mostly
conspicuous with the upper letters of Liberty's headband. Slightly affected are
one or two areas of the upper hair, and tiny places on Liberty's cheek and
throat. Very light indications of some circular scouring in
the obverse field. Bag or roll marking to reverse is minimal, its
details are excellent, and it has nice frosty toning to its lustre. We consider
this coin to be a strong MS 62, but we believe that the photos are clear enough
for prospective buyers to judge grade for themselves. (sent to ANACS for
grading; eta available July 2008)
1898S B
$20

This is an excellent
representative of San Francisco Mint issue from 1898. There is some weakness to
the upper portions of the final letters of Liberty, but the moderate
bag-marking on the coin's obverse is consistent with that aspect. Upper
hairlines are completely visible if weak at points as are braid hairlines. Both
surfaces are lustrous, obverse and reverse. Eagle feathers are strongly
detailed on reverse. Horizontal shield lines are visible but weak, and there's
a tiny mark running vertically across them to the right side, detectable in the
photograph. Due to its lustre and detail at crucial points, we consider this
coin to be an AU50. We invite interested parties to peruse the photograph and
see whether they concur. We're not interested, of course, in receiving any
messages on that subject unless there's a purchase order involved. Own it for Ounce Spot + $65.00.
1899 A
$20

This $20 Gold Piece, from
the final year of the 19th Century, was among the Philadelphia Mint's products.
It has full lustre both sides, is well struck, and has excellent eye appeal.
Obverse has moderate to extensive bag marking, with some tiny but conspicuous
marks near liberty's Mouth. Headband motto is surprisingly well struck, and
hair detail is excellent throughout. There are two tiny marks on the rim
between 9 o'clock and 10 o'clock. Reverse is well-struck and in exquisite detail,
with only modest marking contact. We consider this coin to be an MS61, but we
urge prospective buyers to study the photograph and, if they agree, express
their approval with a purchase. Own it for Spot + $75.00
