Format
is stock number (e.g. 1879A), heading, photos, then description on each $20
Liberty with pricing.
Pricing is by a multiple of the Gold Market Spot price for one ounce of Gold,
latest current pricing on the Comex exchange. We
don’t mean to imply that a $20 Liberty contains an ounce of Gold. It doesn’t.
Its actual metal content, according to U.S. law, is .9675 Troy Ounce of gold.
Pricing, however, is done by a multiple of Spot Price, because we cannot
constantly re-price every piece of metal we have in the house. Even if Gold
Spot goes below $700.00 an ounce, our pricing will hold to at least a $700
basis.
Since Credit Card Companies charge
merchants 2% or more, there will be a 2% insurance and handling charge added to
shipping when paid by credit cards.
Since Double Eagles are the heaviest of the less
uncommon gold coins, handling and storage are more unkind to them, particularly
their obverses, than to smaller denominations. While we make no pretensions of being
professional graders, we try to stay within parameters established by those who
are. As we constantly reiterate, the ultimate grading decision rests with the
purchaser, and we believe our photos and descriptions are clear enough for
anyone to make an informed decision.
We
have our $20 Libertys sorted by date: Pre-1880, 1880-1899, and 1900-1907.
Pre-1880
1872S A
1872-S $20

Letters and beads are quite clear on this representative
of the San Francisco Mint's 1872 issue of $20 Gold Pieces. There are some
slight hints of wear to the higher points below the braid and crown, and only
slight wear on the upper hair near the 2 o'clock star. Bag marking is moderate
to extensive on obverse, but light. Reverse is excellent, nearly fully lustrous
and has excellent detail with minimal wear indications. Nice toning to
reverse's rim and letter area. Own it for Ounce Spot + $60.00.
1873 A
$20

The Philadelphia Mint struck this $20 Gold Piece in 1873, and
it's in excellent condition. Both obverse and reverse have considerable lustre,
near-full lustre. Obverse has extensive light bag marking that impacts headband
letters, hair in places, and some of the date digits. There is some weakness to
the upper hairlines as well as to those near Liberty's ear. There are two very
small vertical marks near Liberty's ear as well. Reverse is more detailed,
especially the feathers, and marking is much more modest on reverse. We
consider this coin to be an AU, but we invite prospective buyers to peruse the
photographs and determine the extend to which they concur. We're not, of
course, running a public opinion poll here on this particular coin. Silence is
perfectly acceptable if prospective buyers don't agree with our grading. Own it for Ounce Spot + $95.00.
1873S A
1873-S $20

This $20 Gold Piece was issued by San Francisco Mint as part of
its 1873 output. Coin has considerable, somewhat distracting dark toning on
many high spots of obverse. Please don't let that dissuade you from showing
interest. Even though bag marking appears extensive, motto and beads on Liberty's
crown are very, very clear. There's considerable detail to the braid and edge.
Reverse has even more lustrous toning, and Eagle feather details are almost
perfect. . Own it
for Ounce Spot + $75.00.
1873S B
1873-S $20

As with many $20 Liberty Gold Pieces, this one's reverse
outshines its obverse considerably. It's one of San Francisco's 1873 issue.
Liberty's hair has weakly defined areas below and above headband, but many
well-defined areas as well. Letters are surprisingly strong, but beads are not
on headband. Reverse has strong details to Eagle's wings, strong vertical
shield lines and horizontal shield lines are quite good. Reverse even has a
considerable amount of lustre. The mint mark is slightly off center, right above
the closing high point of the letter N. We believe this coin approaches an XF,
but wish to stay conservative. Photos ought to suffice for interested parties
to make their own judgment calls on grade. Own
it for Ounce Spot + $40.00.
1874 A
$20

This $20 Gold Piece, struck in
1875S A
$20

We continue our conservative approach to grading our own coins
with our comment on this excellent $20 Liberty Gold Piece, minted in
1876S A
$20

This $20
1877S A
1877-S $20

This $20 Gold Piece is part
of the San Francisco Mint's issue of 1877. Obverse has considerable lustry. Hair is complete and strong. Reverse Eagle's wings have
two tiny flattened places, possibly from bag contact. Many would consider this
coin an MS-62, but we will stay conservative and list it as an AU. Photo should
be sufficient with prospective buyers to make their own grading . Own it
for Ounce Spot + $75.00.
1877S B
$20

We consider this S-Mint 1877 $20 Liberty Gold Piece to be an
MS-61. Both sides are fully lustrous. Detail to Liberty's lower hair and braid
is excellent, and the lack of it on her upper hair is explicable by weak
striking. Feather details are full and clear on Reverse except for contact
marking on the high point at the midsection of each wing. Bag marking is modest
on this coin. We invite interested parties, in the final and decisive analysis,
to judge for themselves from the closeup photograph. (sent to ANACS for grading; eta
available July 2008)
1877S C
1877-S $20

This 1877 $20 Gold Piece comes from
1878 A
1878 $20

Despite wear indications on
letters E though Y on Liberty's headband, on her braid, on the center area of
her upper hair, and to the hair in areas below the braid, we believe she has
sufficient sharp details to warrant calling this $20 Gold Piece, struck in
Philadelphia in 1878, an XF. Reverse has negligible wear to Eagle's feathers
and to horizontal shield lines. Photos can tell the decisive tale, though, in
the opinion of prospective buyers. To buy, or not to buy. Own it
for Ounce Spot + $60.00.
1878S A
$20

This is an excellent representative of San Francisco Mint's
issue of 1878 $20 Liberty Gold Pieces. It has excellent eye appeal, and
generous lustrous toning near its edges. Bag marking is extensive but not
damaging. As nearly always, marking impacted the Headband letters' tops first,
and also several areas throughout on the obverse. Note, however, in the photo
the excellent detail. Reverse Eagle's Left Wing feathers have only slight hints
of flatness to two of its central areas. Mint mark is well struck and clear. We
consider this coin to be an AU. Photo should permit interested parties to determine
grading for themselves. . Own it
for Ounce Spot + $75.00.
1878S B
1878-S $20

Obverse has moderate to
extensive bag marking evidence as well as wear evidence to hair areas. Photo clearly
shows slight dimples on obverse edges. Sufficient details are evident, however,
on Letters and beads and even on the braid, to warrant our grade opinion as an
XF on this $20 Gold Piece that was struck in San Francisco in 1878. Reverse has
considerable lustre, excellent details, and minimal wear indications. Own it
for Ounce Spot + $60.00.
1879A
$20

1879-S A
1879-S $20

This specimen hails from San
Francisco Mint's 1879 output. Obverse has weakness to the motto, beads, and
upper hair, but considerable detail remaining to Liberty's ear and face. Even
her eyebrow is reasonably well defined. Reverse has conspicuous wear to Eagle's
feathers, but also conspicuous detail, notably in the shield lines. We consider
this a higher VF, probably even an XF, but we want to think we're staying
conservative. After all, the photos should give interested parties plenty of
details in order to judge grade for themselves. Own it for Ounce Spot + $65.00.
