Pricing
is by a multiple, one half in this case, of the Gold Market Spot price for one ounce of Gold. We
don’t mean to imply that a $10 Liberty
contains a half ounce of Gold. It doesn’t. Its actual metal content, according
to U.S.
law, is .48375
Troy Ounce of gold. Pricing, however, is done by a
multiple of Spot Price, because we cannot constantly re-price every piece of
metal we have in the house. Even if Gold Spot goes below $900.00 an ounce, our
pricing will hold to at least a $900 basis. We will not sell below Gray Sheet
sell, the weekly Coin Dealer Newsletter
published by CDN Publications, Torrance, Ca.
While
we make no pretensions of being professional graders, we try to stay within
parameters established by those who are. As we constantly reiterate, the
ultimate grading decision rests with the purchaser, and we believe our photos
and descriptions are clear enough for anyone to make an informed decision. Recently,
our grading matched ANACS grading 70 percent of the time; and the rest of the
time we were no more than one or two points off.
We
have our $10 Eagles sorted by date: 1880-1889, and 1890-1907.

1889
1880 B
$10 Gold Piece Liberty
Eagle 1880 XF45

More than anything else, the detraction to this 1880 $10
Liberty Gold Piece are numerous pecks that we attribute to bag marks. From a
foot away with the naked eye, the coin has sufficient lustre to go AU. Closer
inspection - possible from our photograph - reveals and good many pecks and
mars to Liberty's
hair, particularly the crucial area above her left ear. But these are pecks,
not rubbing wear, and considerable detail remains to her hair throughout on
Obverse. The bag was, if we are correct, kinder to the coin's reverse. There is
some pecking on the high points of the Eagle's left wing and to the shield
lines. There is one horizontal light scratch beneath the Eagle's left talon
heading toward, but not quite reaching, the final A in America. Despite the
pecks - and they're not conspicuous except under close scrutiny - we still
consider this coin to be in Extremely Fine condition. Prospective buyers will
express their opinions by their decision to buy or not to buy. Own it for ˝ x Spot price

1880 C
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1880 Eagle XF40

Too many bag marks are what prevents this $10 Liberty, struck in Philadelphia in 1880,
from being an AU or perhaps even an MS60. Hairlines above the left ear are
clear, there's lustre visible between the ear and neck braids, the buns' hair
detail is good, and there's really good detail on the reverse's Eagle's left
wing all the way up to the tip. It may technically be an AU or BU by some
standards, but the multiple marks are distracting. So, to be safe, we're
considering it to be an XF. The photos should allow prospective buyers, perhaps
ones of more stable descriptive capacity, to judge and grade for themselves. Own it for ˝ x Spot price + $100.00
1881 A
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1881 Eagle MS61

This
is a very pretty $10 Liberty Gold Piece, a representative of the Philadelphia
Mint's issue from 1881. It has full lustre both sides. Obverse hair detail is
excellent. Bag marking is extensive but mostly light on the obverse, with a
moderately conspicuous area in front of Liberty's
nose and another behind her shoulder.
One mark extends from side neck hair to back of neck. None of these,
however, are seriously detrimental except for shades of MS grade. Reverse has
only modest marking, and Eagle's left wing feathers have only slight contact
flattening. We consider this to be an MS 61, but the photo should be
sufficiently clear for interested parties to judge for themselves. Own it for ˝ x Spot price
+ $135.00.
1881 B
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1881 Eagle XF45+

This is a very pretty $10 Liberty Gold Piece, struck in Philadelphia in 1881.
Obverse has few bag marks, and hair above Liberty's
ear shows only modest wear. Due to a well-detailed left wing tip on the
Reverse's Eagle, the coin flirts with Almost Uncirculated condition. There's a
considerable amount of edge luster on both sides. We consider this coin to be a
strong Extremely Fine, perhaps even better. Prospective buyers should be able
to make an informed decision based on the close-up photograph. Own it for ˝ x Spot price + $100.00.
1881C
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1881 Eagle BU

Note the bag marks here and there on the obverse, the most
conspicuous of which are in the field between 9 and 11 o’clock. This is an 1881 $10 Gold Piece,
struck in Philadelphia.
Liberty’s face
and the edge of her shoulder line have bag marking. Obverse details are
otherwise in very high relief; the motto is perfect. Reverse, similarly, has
some marking in the field, but the only detectible hint of wear or contact
evidence is on the eagle’s upper right wing, and that is not conspicuous. The
word United has some pecks on its I and D letters, and the Ten D. label has
some light contact evidence. We consider this $10 gold piece to be BU, about MS
61. Own it for ˝ x Spot price + $135.00.
1881 D
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1881 Eagle XF45 with Lustre

Numerous tiny bag marks and some dark toning at 12 o'clock and 5 o'clock on this coin's obverse do not eclipse
the lustrous appearance that pervades its field from 12-18 inches away. Liberty's ear and the
hair above it are still well-detailed as are the lines in her upper hair area.
Reverse has very sharp details and lustre - any wear to the Eagle's left wing
tip is almost negligible. There are, however, two conspicuous scour-scratches,
one beneath the arrows and one more conspicuous to the left of the Eagle's
right wing. This is a $10 Liberty Gold Piece, struck in Philadelphia in 1881, and we consider it to
be in Extremely Fine condition despite its minor pecks. Own it for ˝ x Spot price + $100.00.
1881 E
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1881 Eagle AU58

This $10 Liberty Gold Piece is from Philadelphia Mint's
1882 production. It has considerable lustrous toning on both obverse and
reverse among edge letters and stars, and detail is excellent on both sides. Liberty's hair detail is
full except for very slight contact evidence above her ear. Reverse Eagle's
left wing shows minute flattening in the center only. Bag marking is moderate
to extensive but light. We consider this coin to be a strong AU, but believe
that the photograph is sufficiently clear for prospective buyers to judge grade
for themselves. Own it for ˝ x Spot price
+ $100.00.
1882 A
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1882 Eagle MS62

This excellent specimen of the $10 Liberty Gold Piece
comes from Philadelphia Mint issue of 1882. This coin is lustrous throughout
with excellent sharp details. Marking is moderate to minimal on obverse, mostly
on the date numerals themselves. Reverse marking is minimal and light with two
dark toning areas on the shield. We consider it to be Brilliant Uncirculated, MS
62. More important, however, is the issue of whether prospective buyers concur
with our conservative assessments and buy the coin. ANACS has concurred, MS 62,
and the certification number is 4116295. Own this Fine 1882 $10 Liberty for only ˝ x Spot plus $200.00.
1882 B
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1882 Eagle XF45

We defend our opinion that this 1882 $10 Liberty Gold
Piece is in Extremely Fine condition by pointing to surviving detail in the
hair above Liberty's
ear, to the fineness of her ear itself, and to the sharp hairlines above her
headband. Even though there is some unevenness to the horizontal shield lines
on the reverse, they are intact; and the Eagle's left wing tip area only shows
very modest wear. To balance some slight bag marks on both obverse and reverse,
the coin has a considerable amount of very attractive brownish-lustrous toning
especially in its edge areas. Photograph should allow interested parties to
make an informed decision here. Own
it for ˝ x Spot price + $100.00.
1882 C
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1882 XF45 w/Lustre

This very nice coin, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in
1882, is a $10 Liberty Gold Piece, and we consider it to be in Extremely Fine
Condition. There is some wear visible to Liberty's
ear and the hair over it - under close scrutiny. Reverse's left Eagle wing tip
has some slight wear, but lots of detail, too. Shield lines are readily
visible, both vertical and horizontal, but the verticals are a bit weak,
perhaps from a weak strike. Coin has excellent coloration with strong hints of
lustrous toning near its edges, especially on the Reverse. Fields have plenty
of tiny bag marks, but they're not conspicuous from a foot away. Coin has great
eye appeal, and interested parties should be able to settle any grading issues
themselves from inspecting our close-up photos. Own
it for ˝ x Spot price + $100.00.
1882 D
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1882 Eagle MS 61

This $10 Liberty Gold Piece from the Philadelphia Mint's
issue of 1882 has a very nice frosty obverse with only minimal field marking
and modest marking to Liberty's
face. Hair detail is excellent throughout. The only detractions come in a tiny
threefold mark near the 4 o'clock
star and another near the 10 o'clock
star. Reverse is fully detailed with minimal field marking except for a tiny
nick in the field near the 9 o'clock
letter T. We consider it to be Brilliant Uncirculated, MS 61. The crucial
opinions here, of course, come from prospective buyers and we invite them to
scrutinize the photo and see whether they agree enough to give this excellent
$10 Liberty a
new home. Own it for ˝

1882E
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1882 Eagle AU

Apart from light and
infrequent contact marks in its field, the only visible mars to this 1882 Ten
Dollar Philadelphia-struck Gold Piece amounts to very mild flattening above Liberty’s ear on the
hair, and some light abrasions to the final digit in the date. Reverse has
similar infrequent contact evidence in the field, with almost perfect feather
detail throughout. We consider this 1882 Eagle to grade AU 55, but photos
should allow interested parties to judge grade for themselves. Slab holder label
has been manually corrected 1 digit only. Own it for ˝ x Spot price

1882 G
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece XF45

Visible hairlines above Liberty's left ear, her nice left ear itself,
peripheral area toned lustre, and substantial detail on the reverse Eagle's
left wing on this 1882 well-struck Philadelphia
$10 Gold Piece - all these compel us to consider this coin an Extremely Fine.
Photos, however, should suffice for interested parties to judge for themselves. Own it for ˝ x Spot price
+ $100.00.
1882 H
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece XF45

This 1882 Philadelphia
$10 Liberty Gold Piece has excellent detail, including some detail to the hair
over Liberty's
ear on the obverse. Upper hair and buns are clear as is the neck hair. There
are a few light pecks and scratches on the obverse, including one visible from
the back of Liberty's
neck toward the area of the 4 o'clock
stars. Reverse Eagle's wing tips have slight wear, and there is tiny
buffed-looking area right above the Eagle's left claw. What pecks there are on
this coin are compensated by a considerable amount of lustre near its edges,
obverse and reverse. We consider it a strong Extremely Fine, but interested
parties should be able to grade for themselves from the photo. Own it for ˝ x Spot price
+ $100.00.
1882 I
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1882 AU58 Cleaned

Even though this consummately sharply-detailed 1882 $10
Liberty Gold Piece has been cleaned, it deserves the buyer's consideration.
Obverse hairlines are sharp throughout, and Reverse Eagle feathers - notably
the left wing tip - is strongly detailed. Some nice frosty toning is beginning
to re-develop on the outer edges. This is an excellent coin. From its detail,
it ought to grade more than AU - were it not for the cleaning. Photo should
allow prospective buyers to make an informed decision here. Own it for ˝ x Spot price
+ $110.00.
1882S A
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1882-S Eagle AU50

This San
Francisco treat, a $10 Liberty Gold Piece, was struck
in 1882. Details are excellent on both obverse and reverse, and a small number
of tiny pecks are compensated by considerable amounts of lustre. The hair above
Liberty's
headband lacks some detail; that, however, may be due to a weak strike. There's
only a slight amount of wear to the hair over Liberty's ear, and the bun areas are
extremely well detailed. There is a bit of pecking on the 2 digit on the
obverse. Reverse has excellent details and lustre, with only a hint of wear to
the Eagle's left wing tip. We consider this fine coin to be an AU, but prospective
buyers' opinions are the ones that really count - and the photos ought to
suffice for judging this coin. Own
it for ˝ x Spot price + $110.00. (premium coin,
semi-key)
1886S A
$10 Liberty Gold Piece 1886-S Eagle MS 62 Cert

This 1886-S has light cloudy
toning, with incredibly sharp detail on Liberty’s
hair, Motto, and Ear. Only her nose and shoulder areas have contact evidence.
Date is exceptionally clear, and field marking is very slight. Reverse has
clear sharp details with negligible contact evidence in the fields. We consider
it to grade MS 63, but photos should suffice for interested parties to judge
grade for themselves. ANACS set us back one step, it is certified at MS-62, and
the ANACS certification number is 4116296. Own this fine BU $10 Liberty, one of
the premium dates for its condition for ˝ x Spot plus $ 300.00.
1886S B
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1886-S Eagle XF45

Very clear details on both sides - especially the very
sharp and well-struck Eagle on the reverse with great details all the way to
the wing tip - compel us to consider this 1886 $10 Gold Piece from San Francisco's mint as a
strong Extremely Fine. There should be enough clarity and details to the
photograph to allow the only significant graders to form an opinion: that'd be you, the prospective buyer. Own it for ˝ x Spot price
+ $100.00.
1886S C
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1886-S Eagle VF35

This is a very respectable $10 Gold Piece struck in San Francisco in 1886.
Hairlines have nice detail except for flatness above Liberty's ear and on her ear itself. Reverse
horizontal shield lines are clear and sharp. Eagle's left wing - right side to
the viewer - is well-detailed but with some wear evident from the tip to about
the wing's halfway point. We consider this coin to be a strong Very Fine 35 or
perhaps even XF. The photos, however, should allow interested parties to grade
for themselves. Own it for ˝ x Spot price
+ $75.00.
1887S A
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1887-S Eagle AU50

This is an excellent, well-struck $10 Liberty Gold Piece
from San Francisco's
1887 output. Obverse has slight weakness to upper hair and to hair across Liberty's ear. Bag
marking is moderate on obverse, with one light scratch in front of Liberty's chin toward the
9 o'clock star and another
from the 1 date digit toward the same star. Some light scratches in 4 o'clock
to 5 o'clock field. On the positive side, Headband and Letters are very strong
and well-struck, and there is lustrous toning visible at the edge areas among
the stars. Excellent detail remains on
Reverse Eagle feathers, and moderate marking is pretty well confined to field
areas. We consider this coin to be a low grade AU, but photo should provide
sufficient detail for prospective buyers to grade for themselves. Own it for ˝ x Spot price
+ $110.00.
1887S B
$10 Liberty
Gold Piece 1887-S Eagle XF45

We believe that some slightly weak details on the Obverse
of this 1887-S $10 Liberty Gold piece can be attributed to weak striking,
particularly the weakness of the lines in Liberty's
upper hair above the band. There is some weak evident to the hair above her
ear, but not much to the ear itself or to the neck hair or buns. Obverse has
some darkness in a couple places - near the L, in the 9-10 o'clock area next to
the beaded edge, and to the upper left of the date. Notice, however, the luster
remaining near the edge and stars and some lustrous toning as well on Obverse.
Reverse has very strong shield lines and only a slight amount of wear on the
Eagle's left wing tip. Weakness on the beads at the bottom of the Reverse is
explicable as well by weak striking, and like the obverse, the reverse has even
more pretty lustrous toning. We consider this coin to be in Extremely Fine
condition; the photo, however, should allow prospective buyers to make the
grading decision for themselves. Own
it for ˝ x Spot price + $100.00.
