Fred Robertson, My Wasted Years Autobiography

This is the autobiography of one of the 2 co-founders of our business, Fred Robertson, a very sharp 95-year-old. It is excellent reading, what historians refer to as primary source material, recollections written in the 1990s of events ranging from around World War I until the 1950s. Story includes very frank material on gangster-era hillbilly criminal misadventures, prison life in the 1930s and 1940s, and a strong emphasis on Evangelical Christian Conversion. Of interest both to students of Southern History and of Evangelical Christianity, the language is strongly influenced by King James Bible language and Southern mentality of the pre-World War II era. About 80 pages with photographs.                   $14.95

Vintage Solid 10K Gold Gideons’ Lapel Pin est 1950s

From our knowledge of the estate and appearance of this pin, we estimate it was manufactured and presented some time in the 1950s, 1960s at the latest. Its enamel and clasp pin are in excellent condition – true for the entire item. It weighs 1.8 grams total of 10 Karat Gold. While the brass pin assembly and enamel certainly aren’t 10 Karat, their weight would be negligible, probably no more than .4 or .5 grams if that much. Melt value alone on a $700 gold market would be well over $10.00. We’re offering this excellent pin, a memento of a very significant Interdenominational Christian Religious Institution and historic in its own right, for only        $24.95

Watch, Railroad: Waltham Vanguard 23j VG-Exc

This genuine Waltham Vanguard Railroad-approved pocket watch came to us from the estate of a Mr. John Dupree, late of West Tennessee but retired from a long residency in Pinson, Indiana. We bought it from his daughter-in-law, a woman in her 70s. Most likely Mr. Dupree was a Southern transplant whose working career spanned roughly World War One until the 1960s, and he returned to his native Tennessee during those prosperous years.

The Watch is, we consider, in Very Good Condition. It is entirely intact, and all its working parts function well, down to the winding stem and threads on the face bezel / crystal retainer and rear case lid. Note that it is lever set, as the photos show. We have not checked it for timing, but the watch runs. We do not put, and do not allow, winding stress on any old watches that we acquire. The crystal is intact with no cracks, but it has light to moderate scratches that affect probably 30 percent of its surface. The watch’s face is excellent, with no visible cracks, veins or chips anywhere. All the letters and numerals are full strength original enamel, and the hands are their original blue steel, with full strength finish and no toning or spotting. Stem, crown, and hook are intact.

Detractions to the case include a scuff on the outer edge of the case between the 1 and 2 o’clock positions. Rear lid has about 30 percent light scuffing with a dozen or so small to moderate pecks, and there is light dimpling at the center of the rear lid and in the field toward the 4 o’clock position, as the photos will hopefully show. Bead relief is strong on the lid edges and on their mates on the main bezel case, and there is only one moderate scratch or scuff between the reeds at about 4 o’clock, but this is not conspicuous; and it does not penetrate the gold plate finish. Also note what appears like Roman numerals at 4 o’clock on the edge of the bezel obverse with the crystal lid removed – this is not even visible with the crystal intact. Rear lid is marked Star Watch Case Company / 10K Rolled Gold Plate inside. Lid or case serial number is weak, but the best we can make it out, it reads 22396xx. Factory marking on the main gear plate inside reads: 23 Jewels / 8 Adjustments / Vanguard / Waltham U.S.A. Movement serial number is 33716xx. We detect only one watch repairman’s inscription inside the lid, and that is quite dim. Regulation is set on Fast, pretty much all the way over, so the movement is likely sluggish. None of the movement screws show any stress indications, so this watch has not been pilfered by any amateurs. We hazard that all the watch needs is cleaning, but we are not competent to clean it, since it isn’t a firearm. This is a very well preserved, serviceable and collectable Railroad-approved timepiece that was probably manufactured around World War One. We’re offering it                    for only $ 389.95

Vintage Phila./Crown Watch Min. Hunting Case Exc

Here we transgress our own expertise, yet we never decline to purchase items of this genre and quality. This is a Vintage Hunting Case Watch, and it is in Excellent Condition. Movement and case were manufactured by the Crown Watch Company of Philadelphia sometime, by our estimate, in the early 20th century, perhaps a bit earlier. Movement is functional, although we cannot tell whether the watch would run continually. It will wind, and the balance wheel will turn for several minutes. There is one screw missing next to the movement’s serial number, but its mate on the opposite side hold the movement intact. There is moderate prying scratching in the case area around the movement, with the inner reverse lid open, no more than on 30% of that area by our inspection. Movement’s serial number is 547XX. It does not have jewel quantity numbers, but the balance wheel does appear to have a jeweled bearing. There is one small gouge, about 1/64 x 1/16, inside the inner reverse case that did not, however, dimple the opposite side of that inner case lid. We can see only 2 jewelers’ inscriptions on the inside of the inner case. Inner Case is marked Philadelphia Watch Company, 25 Year Case, and it has the Crown Company Logo. Outside part of the inner lid/movement shield is stamped Phila Watch Co with Crown on the bottom area. Scratching to the outside of the inner reverse lid is minimal. The inside of the outer reverse lid bears 2-3 jewelers’ inscriptions and the case’s serial number, 7229XXX. Outside reverse case lid’s inner surface has one light toning spot, conspicuous in the photos. Scratching is conspicuous only on about 15-20% of the inside surface. None of the lids on this watch are bent. All hinges and snaps are operable and intact. Both outer case lids have slight normal wear, but are by our estimate like a Very Fine or Extremely Fine coin in their detail retention. Obverse case lid’s serial number matches, crystal is excellent with only minimal contact evidence, and the watch’s face is perfect. There is one area on the crystal retention ring that has a slight touch of some sticky substance, at 5 o’clock. This should be visible in the photo. This is an excellent, miniature Hunting Case Watch. Its outside maximum diameter is 1.311 inches. We’re offering this excellent antique watch for only         $169.95      Shipping is $10.00 Priority Mail, insured for $199.00.

Alvarez Regent Acoustic Guitar Korean 1980s VG-Exc Cond

This is a very nice Alvarez Regent Guitar, 6 string acoustic with spruce top. Its principal detractions are repairs to be butt end of the neck where it contacts the body, and a cracked peg bridge. Even if the neck repair might be lacking in aesthetics, it was done well, because the neck is perfectly straight. Numerical Model number is 5212, and the serial number is SL890313xx. We estimate that this Alvarez was manufactured in the early to mid 1980s. We also estimate that it has 90 to 95 percent of its original finish remaining, entitling it to the Excellent designation. We have included, however, sufficient photographs for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. Guitars like this sell for upwards of $500 in our area; we’re offering this one, however,                for only   $119.95

Alvarez RD 8 Martin Copy Guitar VG-Exc Cond

From our knowledge of the musician and the condition of this guitar, it was manufactured in the late 1990s, one of the first Chinese Contract Alvarez Acoustical Guitars. This one is in Very Good if not Excellent Condition. There are nowhere any pull indications or cracks. The neck and bridge are perfect, and the keys are in Excellent Condition. Surface mars affect 10 percent or less of the surface finish. The chief detraction is a moderate crease on the lower top below the bridge, and this crease does not penetrate the finish. There is one area of tape residue on the guitar’s back which will clean off, but we were reluctant to use denatured alcohol on its surface. Despite our disparagement of Chinese-made products, this is an Excellent, bright-sounding and easy-noting Martin Copy by Alvarez. We’re offering it    for only       $ 129.95
