Robertson Trading Post Smith
& Wesson Grips Page
First, a little information for Smith & Wesson
Revolver owners who aren’t used to Smith & Wesson Frame terminology. Not
many people readily know the difference between a Square Butt Grip Frame and a Round
Butt Grip frame, so here is a photo illustrating both, and thanks to the folks
on Firing Line forum for this photo:

Now. Even fewer people recognize the Smith & Wesson
Frame sizes. Around World War II, Smith & Wesson named their frame sizes by
letter. The J frame is for smaller revolvers, also known as the .32 Frame after
the .32 Hand Ejector early models and ancestors. Small frame rimfire revolvers
are known as M frame, but their grip frame is the same size as the J frame. Few
square butt J and M frame revolvers, if any, have been produced since about
1995; in fact, few square butt framed revolvers of any description have been
produced since then. J and M frame Smith & Wesson Revolvers include models
30, 31, 33, 34, 36, 37, 38, 40, 42, 48, 60, 63, 637, 638, 640, 642, 650, 651,
and the 3- prefix Air Light variants of those models.
The K
Frame is the Medium, or .38, frame size, descended from the 1905 Hand Ejector
.38 Special. K frame is still in production. K frame models include 10, 13, 14,
15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 64, 65, 66, and 67. The Model 12 is an Airweight, or
Lightweight K frame revolver, but its grip frame is thinner than its steel
counterpart the Model 10, and grips from the Model 10 and other K frames often
have to be tediously modified to fit a model 12. Labor for a professional job,
for instance, of modifying standard Round or Square Butt Magna type service
grips to fit a Model 12 can run anywhere from $25 to $50 labor alone.
The L
Frame revolvers were introduced in 1980, in order to give a strengthened frame
configuration and to successfully compete with the Colt Python. L Frames have
the same grip frame size as their K frame counterparts. Prior to the mid 1990s,
all L frame revolvers with 4 inch or longer barrels had square butt grip frames,
and the 2 1/2 inch and 3 inch barreled variants were round butt. Nowadays, all
current production L Frames are round butt grip frame. L frame models include
581, 586, 681, 686, and many of the Air Light and Night Guard variants with
numeral 3 model prefix.
The N, or
large, or .44 frame revolvers descend from the early predecessors of the famous
Model of 1917 that was chambered in .45 caliber. N frame numbered models
include 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 57, 58 and their stainless steel
versions with numeral 6 prefix. Most of the small big bore Air Lite models that
Smith & Wesson has produced since around the turn of the Millennium have a
K round grip frame.
In our low
tech way, we list our grips by our stock number, usually just a GR prefix in front
of a factory SKU number; then any photos we have; and then the description text
and price for each grip. This page is not comprehensive; we try our best to
keep onesy twosy grips up on Guns America at least.

Most
Smith & Wesson Revolvers manufactured after 1996 have Round Butt Grip
Frames. Almost all the N Frame, Large Frame Revolvers manufactured prior to
that date had square butt grip frames. Here are correctly configured
replacement grips for any Smith & Wesson N frame or Double Action M&P
Large Frame Revolver with Square Butt Grip Frame Only, like the Model 1917,
Model of 1950 .44 Special, and many others. These are dark stained checkered
walnut, very attractive. We found these in an old Southern warehouse, and we
believe they were manufactured by Sile some time in the 1970s. Grip screw and
escutcheon are blue milled steel. These will not fit round butt variants; if
you’re not sure which yours is, please see the comparative photo we have included.
We’re offering these fine grips, the ones in the photos or their identical

manufactured before 1995, when S&W changed all its N Frames to Round Butt.
Please see the comparative photo if you aren’t sure whether your Smith &

Most

If you aren’t sure which yours is, please see the comparative photo. Sile brand grips have been around for most of
our lifetimes. This is their glossy finished Italian Walnut Combat Grips for
Smith & Wesson K or L Frame Square Butt revolvers. These are very
attractive genuine walnut grips, brand new and never installed. They are in the
comfortable and distinctive Finger Groove Combat configuration, but with
checkered panel centers for optimal control, that in addition to their
attractiveness. These will fit any .22, .32, .38, or .357 Smith & Wesson
revolver so long as it is medium frame and has a true square butt grip frame.
The Nixon Era model 66 in the photo is a good illustration. Almost all Square
Butt K or L Frame Smith & Wessons were manufactured prior to 1996, and
models included are 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 64, 65, 66, 67, 581,

will accommodate HKS and Safariland Speedloaders. We’re offering these fine grips,
genuine Italian Walnut and period correct for any Smith & Wesson
manufactured between about 1962 and 1995, each for

Most
Smith & Wesson Revolvers manufactured after 1996 have Round Butt Grip
Frames. If you aren’t sure which yours is, please see the comparative
photo. From an old Southern Warehouse
where they’ve been sitting for many years come these excellent Sile Thumb Rest
Target Grips for Smith & Wesson K and L Frame Square Butt Revolvers. They
are very attractive semi-gloss finished Italian Walnut, imported exclusively by
Sile in the 1970s and early 1980s. All these are in their original white
cardboard boxes, all manufactured before the advent of the L Frame since it is
not mentioned in the model enumeration on the end of the box. All these grips,
the ones in the photos and their identical mates, are brand new in boxes, but
since they are so old, they have faint dullness to their edges, simply from
age. Box marking is No. 7 / K- TR, for K frame Thumb Rest; and Model
enumeration is K 22, K 32, K 38, and 38 M&P Sq. Butt. These grips are
collectable in their own right, but they are period appropriate for any Smith
& Wesson K or L Frame Square Butt revolvers, since these grips were
actively marketed from the early 1960s until the mid 1980s. Models include 10,
13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 64, 65, 66, 67, 581, 586, 681, and 686 but with Square

Most
Smith & Wesson Revolvers manufactured after 1996 have Round Butt Grip
Frames. If you aren’t sure which yours is, please see the comparative
photo. In the mid to late 1970s, Smith
& Wesson marketed only a few smooth-contoured Rosewood Target Stocks for
the K Frame Revolvers. They were quite pricey at the time, 35 years ago, in the
$30 per set range. There were never many issued, and most of them went on
revolvers like the Texas Ranger 19s and Special Order 66s. Here was their
slightly-less-pricey competitor, the Sile Rosewood Smooth Target grips. These
are still in their 1970s yellow boxes, even though the boxes are somewhat
frayed with age. All these are brand new grips, but due to their age there is
some occasional slight dulling to their finish. Grip screws and escutcheons are
stainless, and only exhibit faint toning at places. These grips are period
appropriate for any classic Smith & Wesson K or L Frame Square Butt
revolver manufactured from the late 1960s all the way up to the discontinuance
of the Square Butt Grip frames around 1995. Models they will fit include models
10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 64, 65, 66, 67, 581, 586, 681, and 686,
square butt grip frame only like the Nixon Era model 66 in the photos. These
grips with their boxes are collectable in their own right, whether a person
even has a revolver or not. They will not accommodate speedloaders, note the
configuration of the left panel with a thumb rest recess only. Some of them
we’ve used require some internal fitting where the frame’s butt area rivet fits
in, not a big deal at all. We’re offering them in their original yellow Sile
Boxes, each for only $
49.00.

Most
Smith & Wesson Revolvers manufactured after 1996 have Round Butt Grip Frames.
If you aren’t sure which yours is, please see the comparative photo. It was not until the mid 1980s that Smith
& Wesson fully began accommodating speedloaders in their grip manufacturing
process. Here are some brand new specimens of the oversize target stocks that
we sold a good many of from the late 1970s until the mid 1990s, to old-head
shooters and police officers who used speedloaders but did not cotton to the
black rubber Pachmayrs and Hogues on the market. These are Sile brand grips,
genuine Italian Walnut and machine checkered. Their slightly raised palmswells
enable sure gripping and their uppers are low enough contour to accommodate
speedloader use on the left panel. Of crucial importance, they are attractive
grips. All these are brand new grips, but due to their age there is some
occasional slight dulling to their finish. Grip screws and escutcheons are

Here is a favorite style of Finger-Grooved Combat grips from the
mid 1970s that has not been superseded or underpriced since it hit the market
during that decade: the Sile Walnut combat grips, #SILJC, for the Smith &
Wesson J frame Chief’s Special Revolvers like models 36, 60, 640, 637, 317PD,
351PD, and 340PD. Not only are these grips period appropriate even for
pinned-barrel vintage Chief’s Specials like our R- prefix model 60s that we try
so hard to acquire; they are smooth enough for easy drawing and re-pocketing,
and the additional 5/8 inch at the forward point of their butt area gives firm
manageability during recoil even from a 360 or 340 Magnum. Buyer will receive
the grips in the photo or one of their identical mates. More notable, perhaps,
these are attractive grips, genuine walnut with medium depth checkering and
enough space for the remaining three fingers even for fat boys like our
photographer. They are strikingly similar to the shortly-produced Smith &
Wesson Banana Combat Grips from the late 1970s and early 1980s. We happily
found only a few sets of these on closeout status in an old Southern warehouse.

Wesson Company is keenly aware of their products’ historical significance. They
continue to offer service and parts for many of their handguns whose age is
approaching as much as 75 years old. Here is their currently, but sparingly,

fitting, since many of the Model 12s have thinner-than-normal grip frames.
Material is S&W Dymondwood: durable, weather-resistant brown laminate,
flatter than the originals but with the same outline and checkering patterns.

48, 56, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 581, 586, 617, 648, 681 and 686 in square butt grip
frame only, mostly manufactured prior to 1996. Model 12 owners may need a
substantial amount of fitting, since many of the Model 12s have
thinner-than-normal grip frames. Material is Brazilian Goncalo, checkered on
the classic pattern that was in production from the mid 1960s until the mid
1990s. And the silver-plated factory S&W logo sits right where it always
has. Escutcheons are milled brass, and
the screw is stainless steel. Surface detractions are negligible, faint
occasional scours like the grips show in the photo. Since none of them have
more than 10 percent of their surfaces affected, we classify them all as
Excellent Condition, never issued. Photo shows representatives, buyer will
receive the ones in the photos or their substantially identical mates, and
photos should serve to confirm our assessment of condition. There have not been
any of these grips manufactured for over ten years now, and there will never be
any more made. We’re offering these fine grips per set, each for only $
45.00.

flatter than the originals but with the same outline and checkering patterns.
And the silver-plated factory S&W logo sits right where it always has.

Smith & Wesson Company is keenly aware of their products’ historical
significance. They continue to offer service and parts for many of their

closest approximation to any traditional stocks that date from the classic
period of roughly 1965 until 1982: Smooth K-Square Target Walnut with
speedloader cut on the left panel. These fit any K or L square butt grip frame
revolver. That includes Models 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 45, 48, 56, 64,

Here
is Hogue's contribution to the lately discontinued Smith & Wesson 6900
series of pistols. The 6906, 6904, and their variants are sufficiently good
pistols that there will be plenty of them around. One reason we keep these fine
grips is that we are occasionally lucky enough to get some Department trade ins
that need their grips replaced, and these are both better and cheaper than the
factory replacement grips. Hogue rubber Monogrips, the factory points out, are
molded from a durable synthetic rubber that is not spongy or tacky, but gives
that soft recoil-absorbing feel, without affecting accuracy. We're offering
these Hogue grips for the S&W 6900 type pistols, each for only $ 22.00.

All of us know Hogue from their popular,
good-feeling, good-pointing soft rubber grips that have been around now for
over 2 decades. There’s more to Hogue than just injection-molded rubber,
though. Here is the closest Hogue ever produced to the classic old Smith &
Wesson factory Combat Finger-Groove Grips for J and M frame Round Butt
revolvers. We called the old ones Banana grips here in the South, but some of
us are sophisticated enough to pronounce Goncalo Alves, after reading it for 50
years. Hogue assets its artistry in their factory snippet of an essay: Hardwood grips are precision inlet on modern
computerized machinery (CNC) then hand finished on actual factory frames,
assuring a proper fit. Finally they are hand polished to a non slippery sheen
using natural carnauba wax which will not crack and peel like cheap sprayed on
finishes. We hope that isn’t a dig against our beloved old factory grips from
the 1970s that inspired these. At any rate, these are thoroughly traditional
looking grips, and they have a feel and pointability that is even better than
the originals. We no longer find these in the distribution channels or on
Hogue’s home pages. Photos show the only set for the J frames we’ve come across
for two years, new grips in an old package. We’re offering the set in the
photos for only $
69.00.

Most
Smith & Wesson Revolvers manufactured after 1996 have Round Butt Grip
Frames. If you aren’t sure which yours is, please see the comparative
photo. Photos show representatives of
only a couple dozen Italian Walnut grips we found in an old Southern Warehouse
for any Smith & Wesson J or M frame revolver with a square butt grip frame.
These include models 34 and 36, and their stainless counterparts models 63 and
60. Very Few 60 Square Butts were ever manufactured. These are excellent grips,
and we sold lots of them during the 1960s until 1980s. These were imported by
distinguished New York Importer Sile, Inc., and all of them are new, just
occasionally with some slight signs of shelfwear from their years in the
warehouse. What these do, shooting wise, is to extend the grip into a longer
square butt style feel, and they give about an extra inch of finger space on
their butt portion. The top of the checkering area sweeps out slightly into a
finger rest configuration for added grip control and distinctive,
period-correct appearance. Photos show a vintage Louisiana Law Enforcement
S&W with a set installed. Apart from that, they look good. These are all
genuine cut-checkered Italian Walnut with stainless screws and screw
escutcheons. These grips are period correct for any Smith & Wesson
manufactured from the late 1960s through about 1995, and we consider them
collectable in their own right. We’re offering these fine grips well below what
similar bizarre looking competitors sell for. Own a set, the ones in the photos
